Polycarbonaat (PC) is een polymeer dat carbonaatgroep in de moleculaire keten bevat. Volgens de structuur van de estergroep kan deze worden onderverdeeld in alifatische, aromatische, alifatische - aromatische en andere typen. De lage mechanische eigenschappen van alifatische en alifatische aromatische polycarbonaat beperken hun toepassing in technische kunststoffen. Alleen aromatisch polycarbonaat is industrieel geproduceerd. Vanwege de bijzonderheid van polycarbonaatstructuur is PC de algemene technische kunststoffen geworden met de snelste groeisnelheid bij de vijf technische kunststoffen.
PC is niet bestand tegen ultraviolet licht, sterke alkali en kras. Het wordt geel met langdurige blootstelling aan ultraviolet. Daarom is de behoefte aan gewijzigde additieven essentieel.
